Nick and I departed out of Boston following the same route as Barbara took last week; Continental to Newark where we connected, after a three hour layover, with our Continental flight onto Lima. Big delay on the ground with thunderstorms along the route, finally got off after a two hour delay. Expected arrival into Lima, Peru will be at 11:30 PM (12:30 AM Eastern Time). A very long travel day as we left the house at 7:30 AM this morning. Luckily we will be staying right at the airport Ramada which is supposed to only be about 2 minutes walk from the terminal. We have to jump up early to make our connection to Cusco, a small city (pop 850,000) which was the capital of the Inca Empire. At an altitude of 11,000 feet we are a bit anxious about altitude sickness and so have started taking medication to help with the adjustment. Cusco sits in the midst of the Andes between three mountain ranges. Our trek will take place in the Vilcabamba Range which has peaks has high as 20,700 feet. I am a bit concerned as I just heard that it looks like we might be starting out in rain for the first day or two of our trip. Temperatures will fluctuate between 32 and 75 degrees depending on the time of day, so If it rains it could really be a more than a bit uncomfortable.
Finally arrived into Lima at around 11:00 Local Time – Great news, Ramada is literally right out the front door of the airport and they have 24 hour room service!! Looking forward to a pizza and rest! Early morning tomorrow for transfer to Cusco to meet up with Barbara and Kelsey.
